TV: Legend of the Seeker

I have to admit, I am LOVING this series! The casting is absolutely fantastic and the stories so far have avoided that tongue-in-cheek Xena Warrior Princess style, even though Ted Raimi did show up in one episode. ;-)

The series is based on the books of Terry Goodkind, including Wizards First Rule, which I read so long ago, I’ve forgotten most of it, I’m sad to say. If/when I get the time, I plan to reimmerse myself in the books, but in the meantime, I’m really enjoying this show. You definitely don’t have to have read the books in order to get into this fantasy adventure.

The best part is, right now, you can watch all the episodes on your computer by going to the Legend of the Seeker website.

Have a gander at the original trailer for the series here:

The second trailer is even cooloer and shows off a lot of the visual effects that make the series so appealing. I think the casting is great, although Richard seems younger than Kahlan to me. The girl they found to play Kahlan, Bridget Regan, has the look and the feel of the character down pat. She’s fantastic! The wizard Zed, played by Bruce Spence, is probably the best part of the show for me. (And if you think he looks a little familiar, remember the weird helicopter guy from the first Road Warrior flick? LMAO!) He’s the epitome of the long white haired wizard!

So go to the website where you can enter your zip code and find out when the show is on in your area. For me, in NY, it’s on Saturday nights. *sigh* Sorta cuts into my social schedule, but I tend to watch the episodes online anyway, so it’s all good. It’s a great show I HIGHLY recommend! And you know I don’t say that lightly.

  1. I’ve been watching it and pretty much enjoying it. I will admit though that I don’t like the way they keep harping on how Richard and Kaylan can’t be together. We get it already. ;p Can you tell I don’t like having my chain yanked that way? (rolling eyes)

True story – I’m watching (checking out really) the first the first episode and I can’t get over how much stuff in it reminds me of Wheel of Time. So I yell to my son about this phenomenon. He freaks.

    Why?

Apparently, this series of books is a major bone of contention to the fans of Robert Jordan of which my son is one. Ooo, so now we have this strange dynamic going on where I watch the series whilst he hovers in the background and tries to “ignore” me enjoying it. He doesn’t always succeed. ;)

  2. Bev – I agree about the over-angsting with the Richard/Kahlan situation. They do overdo it a bit. But what I’m happiest with is the seriousness with which they’re approaching this entire project. There’s none of the over-the-top silliness that tended to permeate the other shows done by these people (Xena/Hercules). It shows a respect for the books that you don’t often get with TV adaptations.

And I think it’s hilarious what’s going on in your house! LMAO!!! :D I had no idea there was any disturbance in fandom over this. I’d think we SF&F readers should just all be happy that SOMETHING from “the standard fantasy literature” is actually getting put out there for the masses – and not in completely bastardized form… so far at least. ;-)

  3. It is hilarious the way fanboys can go on and I’m totally guilty of yanking his chain whenever possible. I mean what’s a mother for, otherwise? Hehehe. Honestly, though, I don’t know the details but I think there’s some bad blood between the fandoms about the similarities between the storylines in the early parts of the two series. Or some such. Don’t quote me on that, though.

All I do know is that it was like setting match to kindling when I so innocently commented on how much the premiere reminded me of Wheel of Time and off we went. Whoa. :D

Thing is that you’re right, it’s a pretty good fantasy series all things considered. Don’t know that I’d go so far as to call it sci-fi but I’m definitely enjoying the stories. (Did you notice in the Lying Moon episode the stars shining “through” the moon? I’m still digesting that one.)

If they’d get over that “we can’t be together” kick, I’d be a really happy camper. Sigh. So, tell me, is that true to the books? I mean, am I going to have to put up with that for years? And years?
